CREDO (continued) Taken from Notes Made at the Conferences of Dom Prosper Guéranger) Et in unum Dominum, Jesum Christum, Filium Dei Unigenitum. [And in one Lord, Jesus Christ, only begotten Son of the Father] Here again Holy Church would have us say: I believe in one Lord. This word unum is essential; it is not in two Sons that we believe, but One Alone; it is not in a man and in a God, both separate, and forming two different persons; no, it is the one same Person, that of the Only Son of God. But why is He here called Lord in so marked a manner? We did not do so, when we were just now speaking of the Father. This title is specially given to Jesus Christ, because we belong to Him, twice over. We are, first of all, His, because we were created by Him, together with the Father, Who hath made all things by his Word; again, we are His, because He redeemed us by His Blood and snatched us from the jaws of Satan; we are His own purchase, His property, His possession; so that He holds us as His by a second right and title, over and beyond that of Creator; and, what is more, his love for souls goes to such a length, as to possess them in title of spouse. That there should be a Son, in the God-head, verily our knowing this is a sample of a knowledge of God differing far from that mere rational knowledge, of which we were just now speaking. Left to herself, Reason could never have taught us that in God there is a Father and a Son; to come to this knowledge, we should need either to have been in heaven, or to have had this Truth revealed to us in Scripture or by Tradition. In the same way, as we believe in one only God the Father, and not in two, so do we believe in one only Son – et in unum Dominum Jesum Christum, Filium Dei unigenitum.

St. Vincent de Paul “Brown Bag Collection” Please remember to bring you Brown Bag back to Sacred Heart by February 12th.  We will be passing out the new bags next Sunday. The food you have donated will help the food bank which we currently serve an  average of 110 families each Friday. Thank you for your generosity.
First Holy Communion It is expected that parents can adequately prepare their children for First Holy Communion, teaching them their basic prayers, the rosary, how to go to  confession, etc.  Parents with children who wish to make their First Communion this year are asked to inform the pastor, who will arrange for a short meeting with the child to ensure proper disposition and the requisite knowledge (including the ability to make a sacramental confession, which must precede First Communion). Highly recommended as a teaching aid is the classic "St. Joseph First Communion Catechism" available at any Catholic book shop. We have only had two families contact us about making their First Communion this year.
Confirmation Those desiring to receive the sacrament of Confirmation are asked to contact the pastor or the church office as soon as possible. There will be a catechism class conducted based on Fr. Connell's Confraternity Edition of the Baltimore Catechism #3 and the booklet "Preparation for Confirmation" by Angelus Press, both of which will be provided by the parish. There have only been four families that have contacted the pastor.

NOW AND AT THE HOUR OF OUR DEATH  End-of-Life Moral Decision-Making for Catholics One of the most important distinctions for end-of-life decision-making is between what is morally obligatory and what is morally optional. Advances in medical technologies bring with them new means of curing disease and living longer, healthier lives than ever before. But they can also be the source of heightened anxiety about a prolonged, painful and  expensive dying process that may not be necessary. The hard choices about the use of medical technology at the end of life may be made easier if we take the time to express our wishes about end-of-life treatments before illness strikes. Come join us for a panel question/answer discussion on these topics sponsored by the St. Vincent de Paul Respect Life Committee. Panelists include David Kaminskas, M.D., FACC, cardiologist with Lutheran Medical Group; Fr. Royce Gregerson, specialist in Moral Theology; and Jackie Stevens, NP at Heartland Homecare and Hospice. Join us Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. in the St. Vincent de Paul Spiritual Center (1502 E Wallen Rd). Light refreshments will be served.                                                                                                                                   Saint Francis invites you to a free public lecture  The Department of Philosophy and Theology and the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Saint Francis invite you to a free public lecture as part of the 2016-2017 Philosophy/Theology Lecture Series. Dr. Lance Richey, Dean of the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences and Professor of Theology, will give a lecture “Polkas and Masses: Catholicism and the German-Russian Immigrant Experience in Strasburg, North Dakota” on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at 7 p.m. on the campus of the University of Saint Francis, Brookside Ballroom, 2701 Spring Street, Fort Wayne, IN. While best known as the hometown of television legend Lawrence Welk, Strasburg, North Dakota possesses a rich religious and ethnic history. Dr. Lance Richey, Professor of Theology, will explore the dynamic interchange of the German-Russian  heritage of the people and their strong Catholic faith. Their history of “Polkas and Masses” is both unique and  emblematic of the American immigrant experience. For additional information, contact Angie Springer at 260-399-7700 x8100 or aspringer@sf.edu or visit the website at http://philosophy.sf.edu/lecture-series/. All are welcome.
