PREFACE (Taken from Notes Made at the Conferences of Dom Prosper Guéranger). Although the Priest has been making his petitions in a low voice, yet he terminates this his Prayer aloud, exclaiming: Per omnia saecula saeculorum; to which the Faithful respond Amen, that is to say, we ask also, for what thou hast been asking. In fact, the Priest never says anything in the Holy Sacrifice without the assent of the Faithful, who, as we have already noticed, participate in the Priesthood. They have not heard what the Priest has been saying, nevertheless they join therein and approve heartily of all, by answering their Amen, yea, our Prayer is one with thine! The dialogue here begun between Priest and people is maintained for a while, at length leaving the final word to the Priest alone, who gives thanks solemnly, in the name of all there assembled. The Priest then salutes the people, but this time without turning to them, saying: Dominus vobiscum, the Lord be with you: Lo! now is the most solemn moment of Prayer! And the Faithful respond: Et cum Spiritu tuo, may He be with thy Spirit, may He aid thee, lo! we are one with thee! Then the Priest says: Sursum Corda! lift up your hearts! The Priest requires that their hearts be detached from earthly thoughts, so that they may be directed on God alone; for the Prayer he is about to make is that of Thanksgiving. Admire how well placed is this Prayer here, for the Priest is on the point of accomplishing the Sacrifice of the Body and Blood of Our Lord, and this Sacrifice is verily for us the Instrument of Thanksgiving; it is the means whereby we are enabled to render back to God that which we owe him. So Holy Mother Church, delighting with most intense relish in this magnificent Prayer, would fain arouse her faithful children with this cry: Sursum Corda! [Lift up your hearts] in order that they too may appreciate, as she does, this great Act of Thanksgiving, whereby she offers unto God a Something that is Great and worthy of Him. And now the Faithful hasten to express their reassurances to the Priest: Habemus ad Dominum! we have our hearts raised up unto the Lord! Then, replies the Priest, if indeed it is so, let us all unitedly give thanks unto the Lord: Gratias agamus Domino Deo nostro. And the Faithful at once add: Dignum et justum est! Thus do they unite themselves wholly with the Thanksgiving of the Preface which the Priest is about to speak. This dialogue is as old as the Church herself; and there is every reason to believe that the Apostles themselves arranged it, because it is to be found in the most ancient Churches and in all Liturgies. As far as possible, the Faithful should make an effort never to be seated on any account during these acclamations. Note: The abuse is almost universal in the United States to remain seated during this dialog as well as the preface, only to kneel at the Sanctus at Low Masses. Correction of this has again and again been attempted at various times and in various places, so no legitimate custom can be said to have developed. The proper posture is either to stand or to kneel, but never to remain seated during this most sacred moment in the liturgy. Thus the signal to change one’s posture would be at the conclusion of the silent offertory prayers, when the priest raises his voice and says “Per Omnia Saecula Saeculorum.”

At the top of the Envelope mark what the collection is for along with your name. Thank You!

Parish Picnic Our parish picnic will be September 24, at Foster Park, Pavilion #2, after the 10 AM Mass. The parish will supply burgers and hot dogs; everyone is asked to bring a salad, side dish, or dessert to share. There is a sign-up sheet on the table near the front doors of church. All are also encouraged to bring any outdoor games that they enjoy. The park is located not far from church, 3900 Old Mill Road, Fort Wayne.

Photographer Needed We are in need of a photographer for the special occasions here at Sacred Heart like the parish picnic. If you enjoy taking pictures and would like to volunteer please call the parish office 260-744-2519. The pictures will be put in the bulletin if space allows.

Scrip Scrip is a very easy way to help the parish financially without increasing your Sunday contribution. Please take a look at the order forms to see if there are vendors that you frequent. If so, just fill in the amount you would like to purchase. You will receive a gift card back that can be used any time and never expires. Please submit the form with a check by dropping it in the collection basket. For any questions call the office at 260-744-2519. All orders must be prepaid and will be placed on Monday of each week. Due to processing costs, in order to make a few dollars we have to have a combined total of all orders come to $400 or more. Your small order can help to reach this threshold.

Bishop Kevin Rhoades to celebrate Masses for married couples celebrating their 25th, 50th or 60th Wedding Jubilees Bishop Rhoades will be celebrating an Anniversary Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Fort Wayne on October 15, 2017 at 11:30 AM. He will be celebrating an Anniversary Mass at the Cathedral of St. Matthew in South Bend on October 22, 2017 at 11:00 AM. Ticketed receptions will follow both Masses. The Fort Wayne reception will be held at St. Mary’s Parish — only a couple of blocks from the Cathedral. In South Bend, it will be held at the St. Matthew School Gym. Anniversary couples will receive two free tickets to the reception. Additional tickets for family members may be purchased before the registration deadline for $10 each. Please register by calling Helen at (574) 234-0687 or by emailing her at haustgen@diocesefwsb.org. For those requesting extra tickets for the reception, please send your check by mail to Anniversary Masses, 1328 W. Dragoon Trail, Mishawaka, IN 46544. When you register, please include both of your names, your home address, phone number, your wedding date and the Mass you plan to attend. Fort Wayne registrations must be made by Friday, October 6, 2017. South Bend registrations must be made by Friday, October 13, 2017.
