Dominus Vobiscum

The Lord (Dominus) with you pl. (vobiscum). The copula "be" is understood.  This short, pithy phrase is used over and over again in the liturgy.  Fr. Jungmann reminds us that this takes its origin from the book of Ruth, the words of Booz greeting his reapers. Thus we are led to believe it was a common form of greeting. The response in the scriptures ("May the Lord bless you") is not the one we use at Mass, but rather we use the response "Et cum spiritu tuo" (and with thy spirit). Many commentators point out that this is merely a Semitic turn of phrase meaning "and with you yourself."  This perhaps gave rise to its questionable rendering "and also with you" in the English translation of the Novus Ordo Mass -- which was, praise be to God, repaired in the new translation. However, to render it in that manner would ignore the additional levels of meaning which Western languages would not have.  We do wish spiritual union with the priest through Christ.

We also note that any time the priest turns to the people to give this greeting, he always kisses the altar. Liturgical commentators have seen in this symbol that the priest as it were receives the kiss of peace from Christ (who is symbolized by the altar), and then passes it to the people. The people's response, observes Fr. Jungmann "confirms this community of desire, this will to be united" through and in Christ our Lord. He continues: "We can best understand the 'Et cum spiritu tuo' as a popular consensus in the work of the priest, not that the congregation here gives the priest authority or power to act in its stead, but that the congregation once more acknowledges him as the speaker under whose leadership the united group will approach almighty God."

Letter from Bishop Rhoades - 2nd Collection As you know, over the past week there has been terrible flooding in Louisiana, the worst domestic disaster since Hurricane Sand. As many as 60,000 homes have been damaged, with nearly 20,000 people being rescued from the flood waters. Our hearts and prayers go out to the families that have lost loved ones and to all those living in communities who have lost homes and businesses along with their sense of security. The Catholic Church in the   region has the difficult task of providing pastoral care in these most trying times while managing simultaneously its own losses. Our prayer and material support is   urgently needed to help rebuild lives. Along with other dioceses throughout our country, we will take up an emergency collection on the weekend of September 17-18 to assist the victims of the 2016 Louisinana floods. This collection can be used both to support the humanitarian efforts of Catholic Charities USA and to provide pastoral and rebuilding support to impacted dioceses.

Thank you very much for your generosity and prayerful solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Louisiana.

30th Annual Bishop’s Appeal Our Annual Bishop’s Appeal will begin next week September 18th in our parish. Our goal for this year is $11,109.34. If we exceed our goal, the parish gets back 100% of the overage. Many people are aware that dioceses typically take a percentage of the weekly collection from every parish for their operating  expenses. Many, however, are not aware that this   diocese keeps that percentage very low compared to other dioceses some of which have assessments   approaching 20% of the Sunday collection! Our Bishop relies on this appeal to run various diocesan programs and ministries including education of seminarians, pro-life activities, and works of charity towards those in need. Please be generous in supporting the work of Bishop Rhoades, and know that your pledges are   appreciated!
