SERIES ON THE SACRED LITURGY The series resumes NEXT WEEK, Wednesday, Jan. 23. There will be a series of talks offered by the pastor on the sacred liturgy, covering the church, altar and its appurtenances, the vestments used, and finally the prayers and ceremonies of the Traditional Latin Mass after the 6 PM Mass on the six Wednesdays before Lent begins (Jan 23, 30, Feb. 6, 13, 20, 27)  This is a great opportunity not only to learn more about the Latin Mass, but also to invite any friends or relatives who might have questions or curiosity, or even misapprehensions regarding the Latin Mass, and this may allow the pastor to be able to answer the same repeated common questions and objections.  We will pick up where we left off last fall with the Gloria and continue to the end of Mass.   In order to make it easier for families to attend the teaching series on the Liturgy and the Mass, we will be providing a pizza dinner and beverages directly after Mass and before the teaching.   To supplement the pizza, we are asking people to bring a salad/veggie type side dish if your last name begins with the letters A-L and a dessert if your last name begins with the letters M-Z.  If bringing a dish ends up being a hardship on a certain Wednesday, come regardless! If you would like to help with setting up for dinner or clean up afterwards, please call Cate at 260-402-7740.   2018 CONTRIBUTION REPORTS The yearly statements reporting donations to the parish are available at the back of church.  Please pick yours up.  Thanks to everyone for a great year!   PARISH FINANCES Financial reports for the last 6 years are available on the table in the back of church (and have been for some time) and the intention is to leave a quarterly report there after the finance committee meets next, and report quarterly summary figures in the bulletin. The next meeting will be Jan. 19, at 9:45 (after Mass) in the parish office, and is of course open to the public.  Our finance committee members are David McClamrock (Allen Co. deputy prosecuting attorney), Mark Johnston (Attorney at law), and Brian Eichman (Certified Public Accountant).   PARISH EMAIL LOOP There exists a google group for the parish, so that parishioners can more easily share prayer requests, announcements, and other information with each other.  This can be found at groups.google.com/group/sacred-heart-fort-wayne If you wish to be added to this group, simply log in to a google account, go to the above link, and click the “Request to be added to the group” button.  Note that if you do not wish to receive further emails from the group, you can opt out, and you can also read the past posts to the group there.  To submit a message to the group, send it by email to sacred-heart-fort-wayne@googlegroups.com  If you do not have and do not wish to have a google account, you can request to be added to the loop with your existing email address. Simply email sacredheartfortwayne@gmail.com with your request to be added. You can then continue to submit news items as mentioned above. Please put “for the email loop” or some such specifying verbiage in the subject line. Seminary update: A personal message from Nicholas, James, and Christopher Eichman   We would like to give you a short update on our seminary formation and thank you for your generous prayers and support. On October 20, Christopher received first clerical tonsure along with 13 of his classmates. Since tonsure, Christopher has been drafted into the seminary’s polyphonic choir and one of the two rotating scholae. As a member of these groups, he will sing in many of the High Masses at the seminary, including Pontifical and Ordination Masses. As a second-year, Christopher has begun his first year of philosophy. His classes include Latin, Chant, Natural Philosophy, Logic, History of Ancient Philosophy, and Church History, as well as courses on the Roman Breviary and the Roman Missal.   Nick and James are now in their second year of theology and fifth year overall at the seminary. Their courses include Moral Theology, Christology, On the Angels, On God as Creator and Ruler, the Wisdom Books of Scripture, and Latin. Nick continues in his duties as an organist, enjoying a new fifty rank French-Romantic style pipe organ recently installed in March, while as an MC, James is responsible for preparing the servers for Masses and other liturgies.   On September 9, Nick and James served for the consecration of the new Abbey Church of Our Lady, Queen of the Apostles in Gower, MO. The consecration and Mass lasted seven and a half hours because of the extensive, symbolically rich rites. At the end of September, the OLGS seminarians and priests took a trip to Denver for four days. This Ausflug included a hike in the mountains and a picnic with the parishioners of the local FSSP parish. Over the weekend of October 14, the seminary volleyball and soccer teams travelled to Conception Abbey for tournaments in those sports. Although the volleyball team missed the final by one game, the soccer team won the tournament for the second time in three years. The seminary basketball team has also been preparing for the basketball tournament at Mundelein Seminary in January.   The FSSP’s goal is to form good priests “through the faithful observance of the liturgical and disciplinary traditions” of the Church, which requires a very structured seminary life. Each day is divided into periods of prayer, study, work, and recreation. The seminary prays the Divine Office in common four times a day, in addition to assistance at Mass and a period of mental prayer. There is a mandatory community recreation period after lunch and a shorter optional recreation period after supper. Silence is maintained in the dormitories at all times, and seminarians are not allowed into each other’s dorm rooms except in the event of an illness. Grand silence, during which no one talks, begins after the last hour of the Divine Office, around 7:50 pm, and lasts until after Mass the next day, 8:00 am. Seminarians are only allowed to leave the campus on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons unless special permission is obtained. The cost of providing this formation is over $30,000/year for each seminarian and is mainly covered by generous contributions. If you would like to support the formation of Nick, James, or Christopher, please write a check to Our Lady of Guadalupe Seminary, put his or their names on the memo line, and mail to: Eichman, 7880 West Denton Road, Denton, NE 68339.   Please keep us in your prayers as we continue our seminary formation.
